More effective communication

Understanding Communication

We communicate in many different ways: not just by what we say, but by the language we use, how we sound when we say it, and how we look. This is important in general communication and becomes very important in creating a good first impression: 55% of our communication is about how we look; another 38% is about how we sound; which leaves a whole 7% on the words we’re actually saying.

So, things such whether you look and sound friendly and confident can make a big difference to your outcomes...

Think about how different someone looks when they are and aren’t standing upright, have a smile on their face, are dressed appropriately, give a firm handshake, and look at your face when they are talking to you. Think about how different someone sounds when they do and don’t use a friendly and confident voice, when they speak clearly and evenly.

As you think about these things you’re probably beginning to realise just how important non-verbal communication is and what a big part it plays in our overall communication. The good news is that it’s not anything new to you. You do this stuff well every day of your life. Now you’ve thought about it though, you can start to notice how you do these things and as you become more aware, you will easily find small ways to make your non-verbal communication even better.

This links with  lsome key Mindsets for Life in a number of aspects.

  • Firstly, being flexible, noticing the results you get and if they are not exactly what you want, changing what you are doing.
  • Secondly, the result of any communication is in the response you get: how does changing your tone of voice, way you are standing, etc, affect the responses you get?
  • Thirdly, you are being At Cause and in charge of your mind by deciding how you are going to act and react in any situation.
I'm curious...do let me know the results you achieve.
