How do I choose a coach?

There are a number of factors to consider when you are choosing a coach. The following information will help you to decide.

Rapport

It’s important that you and your coach are comfortable working together so it is important to discuss your requirements and answer your questions before agreeing to work together:

What do you need to know about your coach to be comfortable to tell them what they need to know to coach you effectively?

Credentials

Check your coach’s credentials. Here are some key questions to ask:

  • What qualifications and accreditations do you have?
  • What professional bodies do they belong to and are they active members?
  • Do they employ their own coach?
  • Are they continually developing themselves?
  • How? (for example, what was the last piece of training they did?)

Experience

What experience does your coach have? How long have they been coaching, what sort of clients have they worked with and what is their track record? What was their background before coming into coaching?

It is not necessary for your coach to have experienced what you are trying to achieve, or have detailed knowledge of your work area. You are the expert on you and your life. Your coach should be able to help you define and set your goals, identify the necessary actions and challenge and encourage you to achieve them.

Making the Decision

Here are the key factors in your decision:

Have all your questions been answered satisfactorily?

Do you feel comfortable to tell the coach everything you need to so that they can coach you effectively?

How much do they charge and is it session by session or do you have to buy a package of sessions

Are you ready to make the commitment to yourself to take the actions to make your life better?
